Introduction to "Return to West World"
This website is designed to introduce you to the novel Return to West World, the continuation of the 2007 novel - West World. Both are science fiction westerns - with elements of steampunk - by Ed Crandell.
Tom Shallowhorne faces the greatest fight of his life in order to save his family . . .
Life had been peaceful for Sheriff Shallowhorne following the famous Battle of Box Canyon. Then, when his wife decides to take their son to visit her homeworld, their starship never makes it to its destination. This leaves Shallowhorne with difficult decisions to make: Should he honor the mandates forbidding him to leave Endia, or instead take matters into his own hands - regardless of the consequenses? Will he keep the pledge he made to his friend never to use his guns again, or will he settle matters in his own way?
In all of this, Shallowhorne doesn't realize that his greatest benefactor - Victor Hawthorne - is really the mastermind behind the disappearance of his wife and son. And that the path he chooses will bring him face-to-face with the deadliest enemy he has ever known!
Starting up where West World left off . . .
The message of Return to West World remains the same as West World - the dangers of greed and corruption, and the internal struggles we face with the decisions we make. This story though is a little darker and more personal than the original. Epic land battles are replaced with personal struggles in the fight against evil. And while West World was very linear in nature, Return to West World breaks up into two main stories - one following the journey of Sheriff Tom Shallowhorne, the other following the adventures of his deputies.
As was the case with West World, Return to West World draws upon actual history to flesh-out the story of a far off solar system. West World had as a loose thread pulled throughout its narrative the events leading up to and occuring at Wounded Knee. Return to West World continues in this direction by drawing upon the gunfight at the OK Corral, and a real-life female pirate named Madame Ching.
What Others Have Said About
Return To West World
"In this sophomore novel Ed Crandell takes us back to Endia, the planet in the stars that is the last bastion for morals and virtue in an otherwise corrupt galaxy. Once again Tom Shallowhorne takes up the fight for the people with no voice and defends all he holds dear. The new characters in this novel add a depth and richness to the ever changing tapestry of the Crandell universe. If you're looking for a book that has cliche characters and a story that's boringly modern Sci-Fi, this is not your book. But if you want an action packed thrill ride that mirrors our history and shows us what we can become as a people, both the good and the bad, this is your series, and the second installment will not let you down." - Rusty, Tennesse
